Late Roman and Anna Novak
$380M Fraud Allegations Emerge After Couple’s Killing; 3 Russians Held
Authorities in Russia and the United Arab Emirates are investigating the deaths of Roman Novak, a 38-year-old Russian cryptocurrency investor, and his wife, Anna Novak, 37, a former television journalist. Their dismembered remains were reportedly discovered in a remote desert area near Dubai, weeks after the couple was reported missing.
The pair, who lived in Dubai and frequently shared their affluent lifestyle on social media, were last seen traveling to the Hatta mountain region in late September, allegedly to meet individuals they believed to be potential business investors. According to investigators, the couple was instead kidnapped and held for ransom.
Russian news outlet Fontanka reported that the kidnappers demanded access to Novak’s cryptocurrency holdings. However, the crypto wallet at the center of the dispute was allegedly empty.
Russian authorities have detained three suspects believed to be involved in the crime: Konstantin Shakht, 53, a former homicide investigator turned narcotics trafficker, and two men, Yury Sharypov, 46, and Vladimir Dalekin, 45, who are reported to have served in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict. All three are being held in custody until at least December 28. Investigators say as many as five additional suspects, all under the age of 25, may also have been involved.
Russian officials say the couple was killed at a villa in Hatta, and their bodies later transported and disposed of in desert terrain. Evidence recovered from the scene reportedly includes traces of blood, knives, and personal items belonging to the victims.
The Novaks leave behind underage children, who have since been placed in the care of family members. Law enforcement sources also confirmed that Novak had been under investigation for allegedly defrauding cryptocurrency investors of more than £380 million. Local media described him as a charismatic financial promoter who cultivated the image of a high-level global investor.
The Russian Investigative Committee stated that cooperation with UAE authorities was key in reconstructing the timeline of the kidnapping and identifying suspects. Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests may follow.
