Awka, Nigeria – June 23, 2025, …ONN…
Students from St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged overall winners of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Virtual Debate Championship, beating top schools from both nations.
The international competition, held virtually on Thursday, was organized by Bring-It-On Africa in collaboration with Debate Mate UK, and aimed to promote cross-cultural dialogue, critical thinking, and public speaking skills among secondary school students.
Other Nigerian schools in the competition included Britarch Schools and Sure Start School in Abuja, and St. Augustine’s College, Jos. Representing the United Kingdom were Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.
In a congratulatory message on Saturday in Awka, Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor and founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, praised the students for “showcasing the Anambra brand on the global stage.”
“Our home is the moulding ground for exceptional talents and record setters who are tapping greatly from the abundant opportunities the present administration is offering,” she said.
Dr. Soludo described the victory as a reflection of the state’s continued investment in education, calling it the “bedrock of Anambra’s human capital excellence.”
She also commended the school’s management and staff for prioritizing student development through exposure to global academic and intellectual engagements.
“Thank you for exposing our students to life-changing academic and personal engagements that will help them to prosper in their chosen fields,” she added.
The winning debate team from Anambra included Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, accompanied by their coach, Mr. John Onuigbo.
The victory adds to Anambra State’s growing reputation for academic excellence and reinforces the role of debate and discourse in nurturing future leaders.
