Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91.
The distinguished monarch reportedly died on Sunday, just hours after the announcement of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a long-time associate and confidant of the Awujale.
Oba Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, having ascended the throne in 1960. Over his six-decade reign, he earned national recognition for his leadership, wisdom, and steadfast commitment to Yoruba culture and national unity. His reign was marked by progressive community development and strong advocacy for traditional institutions in modern governance.
The cause of his death remains unconfirmed as of press time. Official announcements from the Ijebu Palace and the Ogun State Government are expected in the coming hours.
Oba Adetona’s passing marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s traditional leadership.
