WTT Contender Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – June 23, 2025, …ONN…
A host of international table tennis stars are set to compete at the 2025 WTT Contender Lagos, taking place from July 22 to 26, with organizers confirming a high-calibre field and increased prize money.
The event, part of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Series, is expected to attract global attention as it returns to Nigeria’s commercial capital with an enhanced prize pool of $100,000, up from $75,000 in 2024.
Top Names to Watch
Leading the women’s field is world No. 9 Hina Hayata of Japan, who will be making her debut appearance in Lagos. Hayata, a two-time Olympic medalist, is widely regarded as one of the most formidable challengers to Chinese dominance in women’s table tennis.
The 24-year-old is currently ranked fourth among Japan’s singles players and boasts multiple podium finishes at both World and Asian Championships. Known for her powerful left-handed play, Hayata was also the most successful athlete in the former ITTF Challenger Series, which evolved into the current WTT structure.
She will be joined by African champion Hana Goda of Egypt and French rising star Prithika Pavade, both of whom are expected to be strong contenders in the women’s singles competition.
Strong Field in Men’s Singles
In the men’s singles category, Danish star Anders Lind returns to Lagos, where he has built a strong fan base. Lind, who is aiming to end a title drought, will face stiff opposition from Nigeria’s top-ranked player Quadri Aruna, who missed the 2024 edition due to club commitments.
Also vying for the men’s title are Tomislav Pucar of Croatia, Japanese prodigy Yuta Tanaka, and Tunisia’s top junior player Wassim Essid, who is expected to use the tournament as a platform to announce himself on the world stage.
Organizers Aim to Raise the Bar
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Tournament Director Kweku Tandoh reaffirmed the commitment of the organizers to deliver a world-class sporting experience.
“We are determined to keep raising the bar in hosting a world-class tournament,” Tandoh said.
“Our goal goes beyond maintaining standards, we are introducing new ideas that will continue to attract elite players and enhance the global status of this event.”
Players will compete across five events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Winners in each category will earn 400 WTT ranking points, further boosting their positions on the international circuit.
Lagos: A Growing Hub for Global Table Tennis
The Lagos stop on the WTT Contender Series continues to grow in reputation as a premier destination for global table tennis. With top-ranked athletes returning and new stars debuting, the 2025 edition promises high-energy matches and record-breaking attendance.
